Focused Breathing

If you are new to yoga, this simple technique will be the one you utilize as you begin to practice the postures explained later in the book. This is also an excellent tool for use during meditation and prayer. You may want to bring a specific prayer with you into this exercise, or focus on God Himself.

Sit comfortably and check your posture. Bring your back up straight and place your hands on your knees. (You can be sitting on the floor, on a bed, or on a chair.) Close your eyes.

Breathe normally for a few cycles, observing your breath. Breathe only through your nose unless you have an obstruction.

Slowly begin to take your breath in control. Make your breath a little deeper, a little longer. On exhalation, make the effort to expel every last bit of air from your lungs before starting a new breath. At this point, keep your focus on your breath.

Begin allowing a brief pause at the top of the inhalation, as well as after you exhale. Notice how your body moves with your breath, and begin to consciously allow your body the freedom to move exactly the way it wants to with your breath. Allow your entire abdomen to expand and your chest to rise.

Now you may want to add a conscious prayer to your breath. For example, upon inhale, slowly say the words in your mind, “Lord Jesus Christ.” Upon exhale: “Have mercy on me.” Keep your focus on the rhythm of your breath and your prayer. When your mind starts to wander, gently bring it back, first to your breath and then to your prayer.

After about 5 minutes of focused breathing, let go of the conscious control of your breath. Release it to God, thanking Him for the gift of your breath. Sit quietly, breathing normally, for a few minutes. Notice how your energy, your thoughts, and your feelings have changed through this brief exercise.
